Founders' Video
In 2010, celebrating its fortieth year, The Heritage School invited its three founding families to reminisce about the establishment and early history of the school. Their reflections are captured in a video, created by Seattle film maker and Heritage alumnus Austin Wilson, Class of 2000. Interspersed with our founders' recollections are student voices and scenes exploring the full scope of campus life. We think it reflects the very essence of the Heritage experience. Copies of the video may be obtained at no charge from the Front Office.  Feel free to stop by and pick yours up!  Meanwhile, view the video online.

Heritage students collected over 150 coats & sweaters and donated them to One Roof. The coat drive was led by the Middle School Student Government Association and the Key Club.  Pictured here are Ruthie Powell, MS SGA President, and Ellie Crosby, Key Club President.

Visiting author, Andrea Davis Pinkney, delighted students with her picture books and her singing.  She discussed her writing process and shared her journals in which she writes down her thoughts and ideas.  Students were impressed that on one occasion she actually wrote on a flip flop because she had no paper or journal with her at the time! She writes biographies and about  civil rights events.  She brought many of them to life during her presentation. Heritage students will be anxious to read many more of her books!

The first grade concluded their study of transportation with Transportation Day. The students brought their own transportation - bikes, roller skates, scooters, and more - and "drove" laps around the carpool circle.

What Heritage Means to Me
What Heritage Means to MeAt Open House and Grandparents' Day last week, two of our seniors spoke about what Heritage means to them.  Emily Gray Powell, who has been at Heritage fifteen years, and Byron York, who is in his second year here, both spoke eloquently about their Heritage experiences.

Emily Gray Powell
My name is Emily Gray Powell.  I'm a senior here at Heritage.  I've been going here for 15 years... and it's truly been my home away from home. The memories, friends, and opportunities I have made here at Heritage will be things I will cherish and carry with me the rest of my life. Being a part of the Heritage family has truly made me the person I am today.

The friends I have made here at Heritage are ones I feel I will keep forever.  Even as we go our own separate ways into the world, I will still remember them, and they will be true to my heart.  Continue....

Byron York
My name is Byron Anthony York. I am currently a senior, and this is my second year attending The Heritage School. I want to tell you a bit about what Heritage has offered and meant to me, but first let me tell you a little about where I came from. I was born in Selma, Alabama, which was the number one city in the state for high school dropouts. I was raised in the highest ranking county in Alabama for teenage pregnancies and convictions. I was educated in a school system that was corrupted by its own school Board - a Board that created segregation within the schools, a school system that was negligent to the educational needs of those who could not afford a better education, a school system that supported teachers whose goals were not to educate all students - but rather just their own, a school system with a large number of students yearly who were unable to, or chose not to, further their education after graduation, and for quite some time, I thought that any of these outcomes could have happened to me. Hawks Soar to State Titles in Cross Country

The Heritage Varsity Cross Country teams finished their seasons on top at the recent GISA AA State meet. Both the girls' and boys' teams put together solid team efforts to win their respective titles. Each team was led by individuals who ran to first place honors.

The Varsity girls were led by 8th grader Ruthie Powell. Powell ran 20:05 on the 5k course to win the girls' race in her first State meet. Her teammates Lauren Brandner (5th place), Aleisha Khan (8th), Kathryn Martin (10th), Ellie Crosby (14th), Mackenzie York (16th), and Connor Heindel (28th) helped seal the team's victory, which was the fifth team championship in cross country for the Lady Hawks.

The boys' team was led by Gabe Pulsipher's first place finish in 17:03. His teammates worked hard to help the Hawks win the top team honors. Senior and captain Joel Prock finished the race in 12th place. Tanner Brander (14th), Daniel Martin (17th), John Dean Uglum (19th), Larry Shaffer (22nd), and Tripp Brown (23rd) each contributed to the winning team's effort.  The win marked the fourth state title in cross country for the boys.

The Heritage School would also like to recognize Coach MaryJayne Reeves for her outstanding work with our Cross Country team.  She is leaving us to begin a new coaching job at the University of Virginia. Best of luck to you MaryJayne.  You will always be a Heritage Hawk.  Congratulations to Coach Reeves and Coach Frank Marchman, and many thanks to all who helped the Cross Country team this season. 2010 Cross Country State Champions

All-Select Chorus
Last weekend, twelve Heritage students traveled to Holy Spirit Preparatory School in Atlanta to participate in the GISA All-Select Chorus.  Students were nominated and chosen based on vocal ability.  This year was a record year for Heritage - all twelve of our nominees were selected to participate!  The singers spent almost twelve hours rehearsing with over 120 independent school students from across the state.  Finally, they performed a concert of college-level pieces for a packed audience.  Their conductor was Mr. Doyle Register, choral clinician and Director of Music at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Columbus, GA.  Representing Heritage were (front) Cara Stechmann, Jessica Wright, Elaina Montelongo, Julie Thames, Allison Sullivan, Kelly Abrams, Kylie Isaack, (back) Ben Dudley, Austin Steele, Kegan Isaack, Tre Wheat, and William Newman.  Congratulations on a job well done!
